Menopause and Perimenopause Health Concerns

While it is important to remember that menopause in and of itself is not an illness, rather a normal, natural stage of female development, women entering menopause and beyond do experience an increase in the number of health problems they must deal with. Some of the problems are linked to the permanent low levels of estrogen found in a woman’s body after menopause. Others are attributed more to the natural aging process.

Heart disease is by far a woman’s greatest health concern. Heart disease, or Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) claims the lives of more than 500,000 women each year. This is more than the next 16 common causes of death in women combined, including all forms of cancer (including breast cancer). Osteoporosis is another major health concern for menopausal women. Women receiving no estrogen lose about 20% of their total body calcium during the first 10 years after menopause. As a result more that 50% of women over age 50 are affected by osteoporosis, putting them at significantly higher risk of fractures.

The 2004 Surgeon General's report on Bone Health and Osteoporosis is a call to action for the prevention, identification and treatment of bone disease, including osteoporosis and osteopenia. Read a concise summary by clicking here -- or visit: www.MenopauseRx.com/news/sgreport.htm

Osteopenia is a recent term that describes bone thinning that has not reached osteoporosis proportions. By not understanding the importance of bone structure development, many young women are not optimizing their 'bone health' when they are able.

From incontinence to depression to gastric reflux, this section of MenopauseRx.com will provide you with a concise, authoritative overview of the health concerns most likely to affect women over 40.
