Doctor's visits for Osteoporosis Soar

August 20, 2004 -- A recent study in the Archives of Internal Medicine has found that the number of Americans diagnosed with Osteoporosis has increased dramatically over the last decade. There were an estimated 3.6 million people who have been diagnosed with osteoporosis by 2003. This is in contrast to ½ million people diagnosed in 1994. This sharp increase has coincided with the development and marketing of anti-osteoporosis medications and enhanced awareness and diagnostic equipment. In the past, estrogen hormonal therapy was the main treatment for women trying to prevent or treat osteoporosis. In the past ten years, three non-hormonal medications have become available (Fosamax, Evista, and Actonel) for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. These medications, and their marketing strategies, have helped increase the awareness of this debilitating condition.

It is estimated that 10 million Americans have osteoporosis and 34 million have bone thinning, or osteopenia. The current recommendations include universal screening for osteoporosis for all women at age 65, and earlier for women at increased risk. "Discussing risk factors for osteoporosis and preventative strategies with your health care provider is very important for all women. Developing the highest quality bone and maintaining this bone with proper calcium intake is vital and should be counseled to all women," notes John A. Sunyecz, M.D., founder and president of MenopauseRx, Inc. Dr. Sunyecz also notes that "women treated with anti-osteoporosis medications should not forget to maintain adequate calcium intake to ensure correct action of their medications."
