Breast Pain

Breast tenderness can first occur during the twenties and can last until menopause. In premenopausal and perimenopausal women, pain may occur with the menstrual cycle as a more intense variation of premenstrual discomfort. Although uncommon after menopause, the use of hormone replacement therapy can cause transient breast discomfort. Since the pain is usually associated with the second half of the menstrual cycle, there appears to be a hormonal component to the pain.

Breast pain can be described in a number of ways, including fullness, lumpiness, and nodularity. It is usually felt in both breasts and can be worsened by certain foods, such as caffeine and chocolate.
